I thought maybe she was sick or embarrassed or something.
My daughter was 12 and this was her first period. We were on a packed flight to Denver, turbulence the whole way, and she already looked mortified whispering it to me.
So I gave her the emergency pad I keep in my backpack because her mom always makes fun of me for carrying “dad supplies.”
She hurried into the bathroom and I figured that was that.
A few minutes later, a flight attendant came over crouching beside my seat.
Very quiet voice.
“Sir, your daughter’s asking for you.”
Something in her face immediately made my stomach drop.
I got up thinking maybe she’d gotten blood on her clothes or panicked or something normal like that.
The flight attendant stopped me before I reached the bathroom and handed me her sweater.
There was blood on the sleeve.
A lot more than there should’ve been.
My daughter was crying when I got inside. Not dramatic crying either. The kind where somebody’s trying hard not to scare themselves.
She just kept saying, “Dad, I don’t think this is a period.”
I remember looking down and realizing instantly she was right.
There was so much blood.
The flight attendants cleared the back row for us and one of them got on the phone with somebody on the ground while another woman sat beside my daughter rubbing her back.
And then my kid said something that still makes me feel sick thinking about it.
She whispered, “Dad… I didn’t tell Mom, but this already happened once last month.”
Turns out my ex-wife knew.
She just told our daughter it was “normal for girls sometimes” because she didn’t want to pay for another doctor visit.
