The Name Missing Above Mine

thought my supervisor wanted me gone until I learned who else had disappeared first.

Right above mine was Gloria Bennett, a cashier who trained me nineteen years earlier. Gloria vanished from the schedule eight months ago after suddenly “retiring,” even though she once told me she couldn’t afford to stop working. I kept scrolling and found three more women over fifty whose shifts slowly disappeared before they left. Every replacement hired afterward was young enough to be my daughter.

The next morning I asked Gloria to meet me at a diner outside Des Moines. She brought a folder stuffed with printed schedules and warning notices she said Diane created after employees complained about age discrimination. Gloria leaned across the table and whispered, “She pushes older women out before they qualify for full retirement benefits.” Then she handed me one more paper showing Diane received bonuses for cutting long-term payroll costs.

I confronted Diane in her office before my next shift started. She barely looked away from her computer while I placed the papers on her desk. Finally she sighed and said, “This hospital wants energy, not nostalgia.” Before I walked out, she added, “Nobody notices older workers leave unless they make it ugly.”

Three days later, hospital administration called me after Gloria filed a formal complaint and attached my schedule records. An HR investigator admitted they were already reviewing Diane after several employees reported similar treatment. Then I learned the handwritten locker notes had been sent to multiple women over the last year, including Gloria before she resigned.

I stayed long enough to testify during the investigation, then accepted a position at a smaller clinic across town. Diane lost her supervisor role before Christmas, though she still claims everyone “misunderstood her management style.” Funny how people call it efficiency when they slowly erase workers old enough to remember how the place survived before them.
