I Noticed A Pair Of Little Pink Sneakers By My Garage Door Sunday Night After I Got Back From My Sister’s House

I honestly thought there had to be some mistake with the daycare paperwork at first. My husband coaches high school baseball and forgets his own dentist appointments half the time. The idea of him secretly handling daycare forms made no sense.

But when he got home that night and saw the paper in my hand, he immediately stopped pretending not to understand what I was asking.

He just sat down at the kitchen table still wearing his work boots and rubbed his face for a long time.

Apparently the little girl belonged to a woman he worked with at the warehouse for almost a year. Not an affair exactly, at least according to him. The woman got evicted after leaving an abusive boyfriend, and my husband started helping her because she had nowhere stable for the child to stay while working night shifts.

At first it was small things. Letting them shower in our basement after work. Keeping extra groceries downstairs. Watching the little girl for an hour before daycare opened in the mornings if the mother got stuck overnight.

Then the woman lost temporary custody during some court issue involving the ex-boyfriend, and suddenly my husband’s name ended up on emergency paperwork because he was the only adult consistently helping.

What upset me most was how normal this had apparently become without me noticing.

My husband admitted the pink sneakers had probably been left there after the little girl stayed downstairs during a thunderstorm last week because she was scared to sleep alone. My neighbor had seen the daycare van several mornings already and assumed I knew about it.

Even worse, my husband said Leah knew too.

My own sister.

Apparently she’d been dropping off extra juice boxes and children’s medicine for months because she thought I would “overreact” if anybody told me before the custody hearing was finished.

The next morning I went downstairs before work and noticed somebody had drawn flowers on a paper plate and taped it beside the treadmill.

In crooked marker it said, “Thank u for letting us be safe here.”

That honestly made me feel worse than the lying did.
