When My 15 y.o Daughter

Next morning I drove straight to Mrs. Dawson’s house before work still wearing my pharmacy scrubs and carrying the little notebook Emily used to track the babysitting hours. Emily had written down every arrival time, diaper change, and bottle because she takes everything seriously like her grandfather did.

Mrs. Dawson opened the door holding a coffee mug like I was bothering her.

The second I mentioned the money, she actually laughed and said teenagers “need to toughen up” because “real jobs don’t hand you free lessons.”

I told her my daughter wasn’t asking for charity. She worked forty hours that week while Mrs. Dawson went to Nashville with her boyfriend.

That’s when her expression changed.

Apparently Emily had overheard arguments while babysitting because Mrs. Dawson suddenly asked if Emily had “repeated anything from inside the house.” I honestly didn’t know what she meant yet.

Then Mrs. Dawson pulled out her phone and transferred the full $240 immediately without another word.

I figured maybe she just got scared of being exposed online until that evening when Emily quietly admitted she’d heard Mrs. Dawson crying on the phone one night saying she couldn’t let “her husband find out where the trip money really came from.”

Two days later Mrs. Dawson’s husband showed up at my workplace asking if my daughter still had copies of the babysitting schedule because his wife had apparently told him she spent that entire week caring for her sick aunt in Ohio.
