A Storage Unit I Won

The first line said, “If you’re reading this, then she never came back.” I remember staring at those words so long I forgot I was even holding the letter. The envelope was from a woman named Margaret, addressed to the same woman whose name was written across the box. It wasn’t a bill or some legal notice. It was a goodbye. By the time I finished the first page, I understood why someone had packed all of it away and walked away from the storage unit without ever returning.

The letters told the story of two sisters who had spent most of their lives taking care of each other. One had gotten sick, and the other had promised she would always be there. But life happened. Moves. Jobs. Hurt feelings that started small and somehow stretched into years. The unopened envelopes were letter after letter from the sister who stayed behind, each one hoping for an answer that never came. Some were cheerful. Some were worried. The last few were heartbreaking. In one, she wrote, “I still set an extra place at Thanksgiving, just in case.” I had to put the stack down and wipe my eyes before I could keep reading.

At the bottom of the box was a photograph of the two women sitting on a porch swing as young girls, laughing at something outside the frame. Tucked behind it was a newer note in different handwriting. It explained that the storage unit belonged to the sister who had left, and after she passed away unexpectedly, no family could be located. That was why everything had been left sitting there for two years.

I spent weeks tracking down a niece whose name appeared in one of the papers. When I handed her the box, she held that old photograph for a long time without speaking. Later she called and thanked me for bringing home a part of her family she thought was gone forever. I still remember that picture of the two sisters on the porch swing, sunlight across their faces, frozen in a moment before either of them knew how much they would miss each other.
