I Rushed My Stepmom

Ashley thought the lawyer was calling to explain some hidden inheritance account. Instead, he asked if she planned to keep living in the house.

That confused her because the house had been paid off for years.

Turns out it wasn’t.

My stepmom had quietly taken a reverse mortgage three years earlier to help Ashley’s husband keep his construction company alive after gambling debts nearly buried them. Ashley knew about the money. She just thought nobody else did.

The paperwork was hidden inside the same cabinet where my stepmom kept old birthday cards and seed packets for my garden.

By the time Ashley called me crying, foreclosure notices were already taped to the front door.

She kept saying,
“She never told me it was THIS bad.”

But the weirdest part came a week later while I was moving my plants out of the sunroom.

I found dozens of grocery receipts with my name circled beside little notes in my stepmom’s handwriting.

“Tom remembered my soup.”
“Tom fixed the porch again.”
“Tom stayed.”

That’s when I realized the inheritance wasn’t the house.

It was knowing which daughter actually loved her when there was nothing to gain.
