I Restored the Diner Jukebox and Found a Wrapped Bundle Deep Inside

I had to sit down, because inside that napkin was a 45 record in a plain paper sleeve, and written across the label in faded pencil were three words that stopped my heart: Ednas and Raymonds song.

It was the Patsy Cline single. The very record, the actual disc, that played the night Raymond dropped his dime and asked me to dance in 1965. Marge had pulled it from the carousel and set it aside, wrapped and labeled and hidden, the one record out of hundreds that meant the most.

Over the years the diners records had been swapped and replaced a dozen times as they wore out. But not this one. Marge had rescued our song before it could be worn to dust by other dancers, and she had kept it whole, just for us, down in the belly of the machine.

She knew what that record was. She had watched it start our whole life, and she could not bear to let it spin itself to ruin, so she saved it, and left it for the day I would come looking.

My hands shook as I lifted the record I was playing off the carousel and set our own record in its place. I dropped a dime. The arm swung over, the needle found the groove, and there it was, the exact same disc, the exact same crackle, that Raymond and I danced to when the world was young.

I danced alone in my living room, and I was not alone at all. Fifty-nine years fell away. I was sixteen and Raymond was reaching for my hand and the whole diner was watching and Marge was smiling behind the counter.

I play that record only on special days. Our anniversary. His birthday. The day we married. The needle has touched it just a handful of times since I found it, because I mean for it to outlast me too.

I have already told my granddaughter its whole story, and made her promise that when I am gone, she will keep our song safe, and play it now and then, and remember that a shy boy and a dancing girl once made a whole life begin with one dime and one Patsy Cline record in Marges Diner on the corner.
