A Young Couple Hired Me to Lay Flooring Through a House Outside of Athens

I set my drill down on the subfloor real slow, because the setup wired into the houses power down in that joist bay, humming quietly to itself, was not what my racing mind had built it into. It was a sump system and a bank of humidity sensors, freshly installed, keeping the crawlspace under that bedroom dry.

I sat back and let my heart slow down.

Twenty years on floors had taught me that a hidden hatch and something warm humming in the dark under a sleeping family is the stuff of nightmares. But the truth, once I traced the wires, was the opposite of a threat. It was somebody quietly protecting that house.

The previous owner, an elderly man who had sold the house to the young couple, had known the back bedroom sat over a spot that flooded and grew mold every wet season, and rather than hide the problem to make the sale, he had secretly come back to install a proper drainage and dehumidifying system to keep the young family safe and dry.

He had cut the hatch, wired in the sump pump and the sensors, and screwed it shut, all within the last few days. The warmth I felt was just the small motor running. He had done it recently because the wet season was coming, and he could not stand the thought of the young couple, who had a baby on the way, waking up to a moldy, flooded room.

I found his note taped inside the hatch. It said: To the new family. This spot floods every spring and the last thing a house with a baby needs is mold under the floor. I put in a pump and a dryer to keep you safe. Did not want to worry you with it or hold up your move. Just wanted to leave the old place looked after. Be happy here.

The young couple had sworn no one had been in that room. But the old man had a spare key he had forgotten to turn in, and he had let himself in quietly, done the work, and left, asking for nothing, not even thanks.

I called them in and showed them the note, and the wife cried, and the husband shook his head in wonder.

They tracked the old man down to thank him. He was embarrassed to be caught, and said it was nothing, that a house should look after the people in it. They have him over for dinner now, the young couple and the old man who could not stop protecting a house that was no longer his.

I laid their floors beautiful over that hidden system, and it has kept their babys room dry through two wet springs since. Twenty years on floors, and the scariest thing I ever found under one turned out to be an old mans quiet kindness, humming in the dark, keeping a family safe.
