A Korea Veteran Who Never Spoke About Himself

I set down the knife and called my wife into the room, because inside the base of that chair was a bundle of letters and photographs, and the photographs were of a Korean child, a little girl, at every age from small to grown, and letters in a careful hand signed with a name none of us knew.

My wife came and sat, bewildered, as we spread them out.

Her father, the silent Korea veteran, had during the war saved the life of an orphaned little girl, and he had quietly supported and corresponded with her for the rest of his life, a secret act of love he told no living soul.

The letters told the story across seventy years. During the war, amid the chaos, my father-in-law had found a small orphaned girl, alone and starving, her family lost. He could not take her home, but he had gotten her to a mission orphanage and safety, and he had never forgotten her. And for the rest of his life, quietly, he had sent money to support her, and later her children, and had written to her, and she to him, across all those decades and all those miles.

Her name was Soo-jin, and her letters were full of gratitude and love for the American soldier who saved her life when she was five years old. She had grown up, married, had children and grandchildren, all of whom existed because a young soldier stopped to save one orphaned child.

There was a letter from my father-in-law, unsent, tucked among them. He wrote: I could not save the men I lost. But I saved one little girl, and I have watched her whole life bloom from that one small thing. I never told anyone because it was between me and God and Soo-jin. If someone finds this, please, tell her family the old soldier loved them, and was so proud of the life that grew from that day.

My wife wept, discovering the quiet, lifelong mercy her silent father had carried alone.

We wrote to Soo-jin, now elderly herself in Korea. Her whole family wept to hear he had passed, and to know, at last, his family had learned their secret. They had loved him their whole lives, the soldier grandfather across the sea.

Soo-jins granddaughter flew to America to meet us, to stand at his grave, to thank the family of the man who gave her grandmother, and therefore her whole family, life.

I cleared out a quiet mans little house, and I found the orphan he saved and loved in secret for seventy years. He never sought thanks. But two families across the world are joined now, forever, by the mercy of one silent, gentle soldier. He saved one little girl. From that, a whole family grew. He kept them close, beneath his chair, every night of his life.
