When I Tipped It Back Something Shifted Inside

I set down the knife and called my wife into the room, because inside the base of that chair was a folded land deed and a photograph of a green wooded property with a hand-drawn sketch of a family gathering place, cabins and a fire pit, penciled onto it.

My wife sat down and unfolded the deed.

Her father had quietly bought a beautiful piece of land years ago, and had been dreaming and planning to turn it into a gathering place for his whole family, a legacy he kept hidden beneath his chair, hoping to surprise them all one day.

The deed was to a lovely wooded lot by a lake, paid in full. And the sketch showed what he had dreamed of building there: a place where his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren could gather for generations, a family retreat.

The notebook with it was full of his plans, drawn in his careful hand over years, a quiet man dreaming of bringing his scattered family together.

His letter read: I bought this land for the family. I always wanted a place where everybody could come together, the way families used to, before everyone scattered. I was saving to build it, and I wanted to surprise you all when it was ready. If I did not get to, please, build it, or just use the land, and gather there. Bring the family together. That is the only thing I ever really wanted, to see everyone I love in one place, laughing. Do that for me.

My wife wept, discovering her quiet fathers dream of gathering his family, kept secret beneath his chair.

We drove out to see the land that very week, and it was beautiful, wooded and green and quiet by the water, just as he pictured it.

We built his dream. It took time, but we put up a simple family cabin and a fire pit, from his own sketch, on the land he bought for us.

And now the whole family gathers there, every summer, exactly as he dreamed. Children he never met play by the water. The fire pit blazes. Everyone he loved, in one place, laughing, just as he wanted.

Into the main beam of the cabin, we carved his name, so he is always there, watching his family gather in the place he made for us.

I cleared out a quiet mans little house, and I found the dream he was building for all of us, hidden beneath his chair. He wanted only to bring his family together. Now we gather, every year, on the land he bought with love, in the place he dreamed. He is with us at every gathering, in every board of that cabin. He got his wish, in the end. His family is together, laughing, just as he always hoped.
