I sat down, poured myself a coffee, and made one phone call, to a lawyer of my own, and then to the one doctor in town Gerald did not own, because I had just learned there was nothing wrong with my mind, and I was not about to let my husband and his mistress lock me away and take everything.
Gerald thought he had me convinced I was losing my mind. He had no idea I had just heard the whole plan.
For months he had told everyone I was not myself, forgetful, confused, until I half believed it, but hearing him brag to his mistress that the doctor was his friend and two more episodes would get him power of attorney, I understood at last: there was never anything wrong with me. It was all a setup.
After thirty-one years of marriage, my husband was engineering my incompetence, with a crooked doctor friend, to seize power of attorney, take the house and the accounts, and tuck me away somewhere quiet while he lived with another woman. And nobody questions the grieving husband, she had purred, because he had made sure everyone already thought I was slipping.
So my hands, steady for the first time in months, made two calls.
The first was to my own attorney, who was appalled, because what Gerald was attempting, manufacturing evidence of incompetence to seize control of a spouse, is not just cruel. It is fraud, elder abuse, and conspiracy, and it is deeply illegal.
The second was to the one honest doctor in the county, a woman Gerald did not know and could not influence. I asked her for a full, rigorous, independent cognitive evaluation, documented, witnessed, unimpeachable.
I passed every test perfectly. Sharp as I ever was. The evaluation stated, in clear medical language, that there was nothing wrong with my mind, and never had been. That document destroyed Geralds entire scheme in one stroke.
My attorney gathered the rest: the recording of Gerald and his mistress, the pattern of him telling everyone I was confused, the crooked doctors involvement. It was a complete picture of a conspiracy to defraud and abuse me.
I did not confront Gerald in tears. I let my lawyer handle it, calmly, with a folder that ended him. Faced with the independent evaluation proving my competence, the recording proving his intent, and the evidence against his doctor friend, Gerald had no move left.
I filed for divorce from a position of complete strength. The crooked doctor was reported to the medical board. Gerald, exposed, got nothing he had schemed for, and a great deal of trouble he had not.
I kept my house, my accounts, my dignity, and, most precious of all, the certainty of my own sound mind, which he had nearly stolen from me.
He told everyone I was losing myself. I was not losing anything but a husband who never deserved me. My mind is clear and always was. I proved it, protected everything, and walked away whole. He counted on me doubting myself. Instead I trusted myself, and the truth, and one honest doctor. There was nothing wrong with me. There was everything wrong with him. Now everyone knows which.
