I reached into my coat, and I did not pull out more photographs. I pulled out a recorder and a folder, and I set them before Judge Nandakumar, and Gary and Monica, who had beaten and slandered me to seize my home, watched their scheme unravel.
Judge Nandakumar stopped cold, recognizing my name.
My stepson had told his wife I was just a housewife, but I was the prosecutor who convicted the Fairmont estate thieves, and I knew exactly how predators rob the elderly of their inheritances, because I spent my career sending them to prison.
They thought the injuries they left, striking me when I refused to sign, shoving me down the porch steps, would prove I was falling and losing my mind. They had photographs, and a record of my episodes, and the same tired story: she fell again, poor thing.
But they forgot who I was. And the moment they began hurting me, I began doing what I did for a career. I built the case.
First, the recorder. I had quietly recorded them, and on it were their own voices, Gary demanding I sign over the house, Monica planning to empty the safe and fake my decline. I played a portion for the court.
Then, the folder. I had gone, in secret, to an independent doctor, who documented that my injuries were the marks of being struck and shoved, not falls, the wounds of assault. That report, from a physician they did not control, turned their evidence against them.
And my competence evaluation stated plainly that my mind was sound, not the forgetful woman they described.
I laid it all before Judge Nandakumar. The recordings. The medical findings. The competence evaluation. The proof the bruises came from their hands.
The judge understood at once, knowing I had spent my life convicting exactly these thieves.
The guardianship petition was denied in full. And it turned on them. Faking guardianship, assaulting an elder, financial exploitation, all crimes, and the judge referred the whole matter to the prosecutor, my old office.
Gary and Monica, who came to take my finances and my home, left facing criminal charges. My deed was protected, my house restored, and they were removed from it.
They said I would not last five minutes up there. I lasted long enough to end their scheme with the truth. I did not raise my voice or lift a hand. I built the case, the way I did for a career, and let it speak. My home is mine. My accounts are safe. And my stepson learned that the housewife he beat and slandered had convicted estate thieves far worse than him. I left the bench years ago. I never forgot how to prove a case.
