My Daughter Begged Not to Go Back to the Neighbors

What I saw at the top of those stairs made me stop and press my hand to my heart, because the neighbor was standing beside my daughter, the two of them looking at a big cage where a scruffy rescue dog lay nursing a litter of puppies, and both of them spun around with the same guilty, caught look, and then the neighbor whispered, oh no, she wanted it to be a surprise.

My daughter welled up, but not the way I feared. They were the tears of an eight-year-old whose big secret had just slipped.

My little girl had been coming home pale and silent for weeks not because anything was wrong, but because she was guarding a secret far too big for her small heart, and hiding it from me was quietly wearing her out.

The whole thing came apart in the sweetest way, right there at the top of the stairs. The neighbor, a kind older woman, fostered rescue dogs, and one of them had just had puppies. My daughter had fallen completely in love, and, knowing I had said long ago that I always wanted a dog but the timing was never right, she had asked the neighbor to let her secretly raise and pick out one puppy to give me for my birthday.

So she had been going over every afternoon to help feed and care for the puppies until they were old enough. That was why the curtains were drawn, so I would not see the cage from the street. That was why she jumped at every knock, she was terrified it would be me and she would have to lie, and she cannot keep a secret from her mother without falling apart. The skipped dinners, the sleeplessness, it was all a little girl carrying the biggest, most loving secret of her life, worn thin from hiding something from me.

She had been checking on the smallest puppy late into the night, the neighbor told me, worrying over it, refusing to rest until she was sure it had eaten.

I knelt down and gathered my girl into my arms, and my throat went tight, because the thing I had been dreading turned out to be the most loving thing imaginable. My daughter, secretly raising a puppy to give me the dog I always wanted, loving those little creatures so hard it kept her up at night.

I told her I was not upset, not for one second, that I was the luckiest mother in the world. And I promised the secret was safe, that I would act completely surprised, and I helped her and the neighbor finish raising the puppies.

My daughter got her color back the moment the secret was shared. She ate. She slept. She skipped over to the neighbors happily again, because the weight she had carried was now a joy we held together.

On my birthday she gave me the sweetest little puppy with a bow around its neck, and I cried, and she beamed brighter than I had seen her in weeks.

My daughter begged not to go back to the neighbors, and it frightened me. It turned out she was raising a puppy to give me the dog of my dreams, and the strain was only a little girl loving me, and those puppies, more than she knew how to hold. That dog sleeps at the foot of my bed now. My daughter was never in any danger. She was just full to bursting with love for me. And now I know it.
