I walked up to the front of that lot, past the banners and the food truck and the radio crew live out front, in my clean shirt.
The installer saw me and reached for his coat, same as the day he shrugged and left me with a cold house.
I did not cuss him out. I had a folder, and the folder was enough.
He told me my guarantee was voided because I had not paid a licensed tech to service the furnace yearly. So I asked a simple question, the one he hoped I would never think to ask.
How does a man service a furnace yearly when it did not last a single year?
It quit in the first frost. Weeks, not months. There was no year in which to service anything.
You wrote a rule that could never be met, I said, and then you used that impossible rule to keep six thousand dollars of mine, and a promise built so it can never be kept was never a promise at all.
Here is the thing he did not count on.
The furnace itself came with a warranty from the manufacturer, separate from his install, and when I called that manufacturer and read them the runaround he had given me, they were not pleased. A brand-new unit failing in the first frost is an install problem, and install problems land squarely on the man who did the installing.
I had already filed with the state licensing board too. My folder was in their hands, and mine was not the only cold house on their list.
The radio crew was live twenty feet away. They heard a calm old man explain how a company had voided a guarantee with a rule that could not be met, and they wanted to hear more, and I was glad to tell them.
A fall kickoff does not survive that kind of truth spoken plain.
Between the manufacturer and the licensing board, the company folded. They replaced the furnace with a new one, properly installed by a different crew, and refunded me besides for the trouble and the space heaters.
My house is warm now. And when my grandkids came to visit at Thanksgiving, they ran around in their socks, and not one of them was cold.
That is the whole reason I bought the thing in the first place.
I did not raise my voice at that man. I just asked him how to service a furnace that never lasted a year, and let everybody standing there do the math.
Have a blessed day, I told him. My grandkids and I have had a warm one, thanks to nobody but the truth.
