The Guy Who Never Cleaned the Kitchen

The photo showed the microwave with smoke curling out of the door, the plate inside burnt black, and the kitchen rota taped to the fridge right beside it. The rota had one name written in the box for this week.

Danny.

I tagged him. That was all. No caption.

It took about eleven seconds. Somebody replied with a laughing face. Somebody else replied with a fire emoji. Then the office manager, Deb, replied with one word. Danny?

Danny sat up. He looked at his phone. He looked at the rota on the fridge through the kitchen doorway. His name had been on it since Monday. He had never once looked.

The two people at the next desk were trying very hard not to laugh.

A whole year of being called the office mom, and one photo showed the entire floor exactly whose mess it was.

Danny got up without saying anything. He went into the kitchen. He opened the windows, dragged the smoking plate out with a dish towel, and dumped it in the trash outside. Then he stood at that sink for forty minutes and washed every dish in it. Some of them were his from before Christmas.

Deb came by my desk that afternoon. She said she had no idea it had gotten that bad. She said after the cleaning contract ended in January, she assumed people would just take care of it. She said she knew who had actually been taking care of it, and thanked me.

The next week there was a new rota. Laminated. With a checkbox for each day. And a note from Deb at the bottom saying anyone who skipped their week would be on dishes for a month.

Nobody skipped.

But the part I did not expect was Danny. About a week later, he stopped by my desk. He said he was sorry. He said he grew up with a mom who did everything for everybody, and he never thought about who was cleaning up after him because somebody always had. He said the photo was the most embarrassed he had ever been at work.

Then he said something else. He said his mom saw the group chat, because his cousin works on our floor and showed her. She called him that night and gave him a talking to he said he would remember until he died.

I laughed so hard I almost spilled my coffee.

The following Monday there was a brand new microwave in the kitchen. Danny had bought it with his own money. There was a sticky note on the door in his handwriting. Clean up after yourself. Signed, the guy who learned the hard way.

He keeps the kitchen better than any of us now. He even brings in donuts on the Friday of his week. He says it is his penance.

Last month someone left a burnt bagel in the microwave. Danny found it. He did not post anything. He just cleaned it up and walked back to his desk.

Then he winked at me.
