Her Own Hand On The Screen

Ruth stood in her doorway and sighed and told me to stop ordering things I could not keep track of. So I told her the carrier had switched me to signature-required in July, showed her the photo the driver took of who signed, her own hand on the screen at 2:14 that Tuesday, and asked whether she would rather give them back to me or to the postal inspector already on his way.

Because I had stopped filing claims and started building a case. A year of missing boxes, and after the tenth one I had quietly asked the carrier to require a signature and a photo on every delivery, so the next disappearance would come with proof.

For a year the only thing I had lacked was evidence, and the moment a package needed a signature, the woman accusing me of accusing a retired lady became a woman photographed signing for my daughters hearing aids at 2:14 on a Tuesday.

The mail carrier was three houses down. My neighbor across the street had stopped his mower, because the whole street had heard Ruth call me a liar for a year, and the whole street was about to hear how it ended.

I did not yell and I did not step onto her porch. I said, the driver takes a photo of every signature now. This one is your hand, your sleeve, your door, at 2:14 Tuesday, signing for a three-thousand-dollar box of my daughters hearing aids. The postal inspector has a copy. You can hand them back to me, or to him.

The photo was the photo. There is no sighing your way out of your own hand on the screen with a timestamp on it.

Ruth went inside and came back with a box, and then another, and then the hearing aids, still sealed. Mail theft is a federal matter, and a signature photo is not something a claim adjuster or an inspector argues with.

My daughter had her hearing aids back by the weekend, and she went to school able to hear her teacher again, which was the only thing I had ever actually cared about.

The inspector kept his file open long enough to be sure it stopped, and it did. A year of missing boxes ended not with another claim form, but with one timestamped photo held up from my own porch, and it turned out the man accusing a retired woman was just the only one who finally asked for a signature.
