I set my wrench down real slow, because when I cut the false head open on that pressure tank plumbed to nothing and reached inside, my hand did not find water or air. It found bundled cash and a thick leather ledger, sealed dry inside a tank dressed up to look like the dullest thing in the room.
The young couple who hired me gathered close, and we opened the ledger on the workbench, and what was written in it was not a mans crimes. It was a mans secret kindness, decades of it.
The old man who owned that house had disguised a strongbox as a pressure tank to hide the record of a lifetime of anonymous charity, because he had given quietly to half the town for forty years and never once let his name be attached to a single gift.
Page after page. A widows mortgage paid one December. A boys college tuition covered from nowhere. A families groceries for a whole hard winter. The volunteer fire department new equipment, the church a new roof, a stranger a funeral, all of it anonymous, all of it in that ledger in a plain hand, with never a name given to the town but a note beside each one, they must never know it was me.
The cash in the tank, the letter tucked in the ledger explained, was the rest of it, what he did not live to give away. And the letter asked whoever found it to carry on, quietly, the same way, and it named a few families in current need.
The young couple sat with that a long time. They did not need the money and they knew whose it really was, which was the towns. So they did what the old man asked. Quietly, over the next year, anonymous envelopes began appearing again around Point Pleasant, the way they had for forty years and then mysteriously stopped, and the town wondered, the way it always had, who its secret angel was.
Only now it is a young couple carrying on an old mans ledger, and me, who will never tell, and the old man himself, who disguised his whole generous heart as a pressure tank so that not even in death would he be thanked.
Eighteen years on water systems and I have hauled out a hundred dead tanks full of nothing but rust. I did not know one could be full of a mans secret goodness instead. I think about that old man every job I run now. Some people hide a fortune to keep it. He hid one to give it all away without anybody ever knowing his name.
