Whose Driveway

When everybody gathered up for the last race, Jamal set his plate down and told Brittney she might want to know whose driveway his van had been parking in since April, and he pulled a set of keys out of his pocket and held them up in the Derby-day sun.

Not van keys. House keys, and a second fob, and a little tag. My son, the Amazon driver Brittney sees on her route every single day, had bought a business. Since April he had been quietly parking his van in the lot of a package-and-shipping company on the east side, because he had bought into it, and as of that week he owned it outright, the building, the vans, the contracts.

My son did not just drop boxes on porches, he learned the delivery business from the inside so well that he bought his own, and the van Brittney watched every day had been pulling into his own companys lot for months.

He had seen, on those 180 stops a day, exactly how the last-mile business worked and where the money was, and when the old owner wanted out, my son and his wife Kiara had the savings and the know-how ready. The keys he held up were to the building. Eight drivers work for him now. He still runs a route himself some mornings, because he likes walking the old ladies prescriptions up to the door.

Brittney, real estate license and big hat, looked at those keys and did the math on a man who owns a shipping company, and her mint julep went still in her hand.

Jamal did not gloat. He put the keys away and said, thanks for noticing my van, Brittney. It has been parking at my own place. You should come by, we do real estate closings, lots of documents to ship. And Kiara, across the lawn with the baby, raised that one eyebrow again, only now she was smiling.

The party clapped. Somebody has got to drop the boxes on porches, Brittney had said. My son owns the company that drops them now, and he still walks the prescriptions to the door himself, because that is the part he never wanted to give up.
