I dug past the ice to the package marked venison 2021 in Earls chest freezer, and it was not venison, it was a document with a notary seal and Earls signature and Crystals name on it, and I read it with my cold hands shaking, and then I told Tasha, honey, take me to the courthouse, not home.
My daughter-in-law Crystal, the Huntsville realtor, had come to my rehab bed with papers and told me I could not do stairs anymore, that shed already listed the house and had a buyer, that I had signed power of attorney to her in 2023, that the house was getting sold one way or another.
She did not know what Earl froze in 2021.
What Crystal called my 2023 power of attorney was a document Earl saw coming, because in 2021 he had me sign, before a notary, a revocation and a deed placing our lake house into a protective trust with my grandson as trustee, and it named Crystal specifically, barring her from ever selling this house out from under me.
Earl did not trust Crystal, and he was right not to. He had watched her maneuver for two years, and quietly, in 2021, he set up a trust that protects the house for my lifetime and puts my honest grandson, not Crystal, in charge of it, and he had it notarized and hid it in the freezer under a label nobody would ever open, and told me where it was.
The power of attorney Crystal waved at me had been revoked by that 2021 document. Her listing was worthless. She had no authority to sell a house held in a trust she does not control, and the trust names her as the one person who may never buy or broker it.
Tasha drove me to the courthouse and then to a lawyer, who read Earls trust and the notarized revocation and said, maam, your daughter-in-law has been listing a house she has no power over, and you need to make some calls today.
I made them. The listing came down. The buyer was told the house was never legally for sale. My son, when he learned what his wife had done and what his father had quietly prevented, was quiet for a long time on the phone.
That house is getting sold one way or another, Crystal had said, with me in a hospital bed. It did not get sold. Earl built the boathouse and the deck that goes all the way around, and he protected it from the one person he knew would come for it, and hid the proof in the freezer.
I am home now. I did the stairs slow, but I did them. I sit on Earls deck every evening with my coffee, watching the sun go down over the water, in the house my husband froze safe for me under a label that said venison.
