Go X-Ray That

The mail truck pulled up to the mailbox, and Carls face went white, because the certified letter from Social Security was arriving, and the disability checks he had been redirecting for three years were about to catch up with him.

For years Carl treated me like my mothers unpaid driver and nurse, and my mother looked at the floor. This time the truth came from the hospital billing office, because Mrs. Tate pulled up my mothers file and asked the right question.

What Mrs. Tate found was that my mothers SSDI disability checks had been going to an account in Pine Bluff since 2021, not to my mother, and Carl had been quietly collecting my mothers disability for three years while making me responsible for everything her checks were supposed to cover.

The printout in my backpack held it, and the sticky note with the Social Security number Mrs. Tate told me to call. That morning I called, and reported that my mothers benefits were being diverted, and the agency does not treat that lightly.

Carl burned my study guide and my radiation badge and told me to go X-ray that. He did not know the certified letter was already on the truck. His face went white when he saw the mail coming, because he knew, before anyone said it, what it had to be.

My mother finally looked up and asked what I did. I fixed something, Mama, I told her. You will understand when you read it.

I drove to a friends and studied from a library copy, and the next morning I passed my ARRT boards, because Carl could burn a badge but not two years of clinicals.

I am a registered radiologic technologist now at a hospital here. My mothers benefits are being restored to her, and the diversion is with Social Security and the police, on paper, where go X-ray that does not help Carl.

The best part is my mother. When she read the letter and understood that her own checks had been taken, something changed in her. She let me help her leave. She lives with me now, and her disability goes to her, where it always should have.

Why are her checks going to Pine Bluff, Mrs. Tate asked me. They are not, anymore. And Carls face went white before the mailman reached the porch, because the truth came certified, with a return receipt.
