Who Stood Behind Him

My husband drove to his mothers house and she opened the door smiling, holding our two-year-old in a brand-new pink dress, pleased as could be about her surprise, until she saw who was standing behind him on the walk. Two police officers.

Her smile went out like a light.

Here is why they were there. To take our child, she had walked into the daycare with a form she signed herself and a photo of her holding the baby, and talked her way onto a list we had never put her on. Forging a pickup authorization and removing a child who is not yours is not a family misunderstanding. It is a crime, and the daycare, once they realized they had handed a two-year-old to someone we never authorized, called the police themselves. My husband simply met the officers there.

For three hours that afternoon I did not know where my daughter was. Three hours her phone went to voicemail. A parent does not come all the way back from three hours like that and then pretend it was a cute surprise.

She pierced the ears of a two-year-old without asking her parents, and expected applause. What she got was a police report.

The officers were calm and so was my husband. They documented the forged form. They made it a matter of record, so that it could never be waved away later as grandma being grandma. The daycare pulled her from every list and flagged her name, and put real checks in place so it could not happen to another family.

We did not press to put an old woman in a cell. That was never the point. The point was that there would be a record, and a line she could never again pretend she did not know about.

Our daughter is fine. We took her to the pediatrician about the ears, and we will let her decide about all that when she is old enough to ask. My mother-in-law has supervised visits now, in our home, when we say, and she knows exactly why.

She wanted a surprise. The surprise was learning that our child is ours, that there are lists for a reason, and that my quiet husband will put two officers on her doorstep before he will ever again spend three hours not knowing where his daughter is.
