The Comment He Left

The next day his mother posted a teary update video to the fundraiser, dabbing her eyes, thanking everyone for supporting her poor struggling son and his family. Ten minutes later, right underneath it, my husband left a comment. He did not rage. He told the truth, in order, for everyone who had given money to read.

He wrote that we are the family in the photos, that we both have jobs, that we have no medical bills, that we never lost anything, and that we never saw a dollar of the eleven thousand four hundred dollars raised in our name. He wrote that the campaign was created without our knowledge and that the money went to his mothers personal bank account. He thanked every person who gave out of love, and he gave them the exact steps to request a full refund.

Then he reported the whole thing to the fundraising platform, with screenshots, and they do not play around with a fraud claim backed by the supposed beneficiaries themselves.

She wanted a sad story with her name on the donations. He gave the internet a true one, with the refund button attached.

The platform froze the funds and refunded the donors, every one. My college friend got her hundred dollars back. My aunt got hers. The teachers and coworkers and old neighbors who had opened their wallets for a lie were made whole.

This was the same woman who borrowed three thousand dollars from us for a car repair and turned up a week later in a new SUV. So none of us were shocked. We were just done.

Raising money by fraud, using someone elses name and their babys face, is not just tacky. It is against the law, and my husband made sure there was a clean record of exactly what happened, in case it ever needed to be more than a family matter.

She took the video down. She took the whole page down. For a while she told relatives that we had humiliated her. A few of them reminded her, gently, that she did that to herself, on camera, with our baby in the thumbnail.

We are not struggling. We never were. The only thing we ever needed help with was her, and my husband handled that in one honest comment.
