The Text She Left

My granddaughter turned her phone toward me in the church sanctuary, the baby still fussing in the font, and showed me the text her mother, my daughter Cathy, had sent her the night before. If Pop-Pop finds out about the porch, show him this.

Below it was a photograph of the permit, and Cathys own message. Daddy, I am so sorry. Bobby has a note I co-signed years ago and he has been holding it over me. He made me notarize his permit. But I wrote WITNESS UNDER DURESS and the date in the corner, small, and I kept the real paperwork. The signature on the owner line is forged. It is not yours. Stop him.

My daughter had been cornered by Bobby Whitley the same way I was being robbed by him. He had used an old debt to force her to notarize a forged permit to build an addition onto Ruths cottage, onto the screened porch where Ruth and I sat every night of our 1966 honeymoon. Cathy could not refuse him outright. So she sabotaged it from the inside and left her own daughter the proof.

She faked being sick to miss the christening because she could not look me in the eye. But she made sure I would have everything I needed to stop it.

The Dare County deputy stopped the Bobcat and the saw. Cathys hidden paperwork and her under duress notation proved the owner signature was forged, and a forged permit is a crime, debt or no debt. Bobby Whitley is answering for the forgery now, and the old debt he used as a whip turned out not to be worth nearly what he threatened.

Ruths porch still stands. They cut into one wall and I had it put right, better than before.

Cathy came to me in tears after, ashamed she had let Bobby use her at all. I told her she did the one thing that mattered, she protected her fathers house and left the trail to catch the man who forced her. We are all right, Cathy and I. Better than all right. I am a retired ferry captain. I know the difference between someone who betrays you and someone who throws you a line while they are drowning too.
