No Child Support

Monica, my brothers ex-wife, handed my mother a folded paper across the fifty-two degree kitchen and said, Patricia, I did not know about the furnace until Jenny called me. Derek told me you were the reason he could not pay child support. He said you needed money for your medicine.

Derek had told everyone a different lie. He told Mama he was behind on child support and they would jail him, so she lent him her four thousand eight hundred dollar furnace fund. He told Monica that his mother needed the money for medicine, to explain why the child support never came. He had been lying in two directions at once for years.

The paper Monica handed Mama was the court record. Derek had not paid child support since 2021, long before he ever touched Mamas furnace money. There was no emergency. There was just a man who used his own mother and his own children as excuses for each other.

He said Mama is tough, she grew up on the Iron Range, she can use blankets and space heaters at thirty below. His mother was wearing two sweaters and a stocking cap inside her own house.

Monica had believed Dereks story for years until I called her. When she saw her own kids grandmother sitting in a freezing house, she brought the court record and the truth to Christmas Eve.

Faced with Monica, the court papers, and two children who heard every word, Derek paid Mama back. It is remarkable how fast a man finds money when the lie finally has nowhere to hide.

Mama had a new furnace installed the week after Christmas. The house is warm now, warm enough to take off your coat, which we had not done at Mamas table in a long time.

Monica and the kids come for Sunday supper now. My mother, warm at last, has her grandbabies back at her table. Derek spends his winters somewhere else. I am told he is cold. I find I do not mind.
