Room 117

Ray Delgado pushed the motel door open, and the man in the cardigan stepped back with his hands up and took off his reading glasses. My name is Victor Castillo, he said. I am Elenas father.

On the edge of the bed, Elena let out a sob. Papa. How did you find us. Victor looked at the officers, and then at the little girl in the bathroom doorway, and he said, because Rafael called me. Two hours ago. And he told me where to come.

It took the rest of the night to understand it. Rafael, the charming man who had emptied Elenas savings and driven her and Maya toward the border, had finally run up against the edge of what he was willing to be. Somewhere on that dark highway, with a crying child in the back seat, something in him broke the right way instead of the wrong way. He could not go through with it. But he was too much of a coward to undo it himself. So he called the one person he knew could, the father Elena had not spoken to in years, and he told him the name of the motel, and then he ran.

The police would catch up with Rafael for what he had already done. But that one phone call was the reason a mother and her daughter were found before a border, and not after.

The man Elena trusted nearly cost her everything, and in the end the thing that saved her was a father she had shut out, driving through the night at the word of a stranger.

Elena and Maya were safe. Her car and savings were gone, but those are the kind of things that can be rebuilt. Victor drove them home to San Antonio himself, and on that long drive, a father and a daughter said things to each other that should have been said years before.

The passports Rafael had taken were recovered and returned. Maya, who had called for help from a bathtub so a man would not hear her, got to grow up near a grandfather she had barely known, who never again let anything come between him and his girls.

Elena learned the hardest way that the people who cut you off from your family are rarely doing it for love. And her father learned that it is never too late to answer the phone and drive.
