The Secret Word

Three knocks, then two, then three again, faint and muffled, came up from somewhere beneath the big white house on the hill. Roy Tates face went gray. That is our knock, he whispered. She is under the house.

Dante Wells and Holly Burke found the crawlspace access around the side, got the panel off, and brought seventeen-year-old Kaylee Tate up out of the dark, cold and bruised and crying, into her grandfathers arms.

The polished family at the candlelit dinner table stopped being polished very quickly. For six months Chase Whitmore had been doing to Kaylee the quiet, careful kind of harm that leaves marks a girl hides under long sleeves in August and a fear she cannot explain. That night, when she tried to leave, he had locked her in the crawlspace to cool off, and his parents, the councilman and the realtor, had sat down to supper like nothing was wrong.

What they did not know was that Kaylee still had her phone, and that she and her grandfather had a word. Bluebird. Picked when she was five. It means come get me right now, do not ask questions. She had typed it with shaking hands in the dark, and Roy had been in the truck before the message finished sending.

A code word two people made up over a fishing pole twelve years ago reached down through the floor of a strangers house and pulled a girl back into the light.

Chase was arrested. So were his parents, for what they had allowed under their own roof, and the councilmans name and the realtors firm did not buy them out of a single charge.

Kaylee went home with Roy that night, to the little house where he had raised her, taught her to fish, taught her to change a tire, walked her into kindergarten. It took time, and help, and patience, for the long sleeves to come off and the appetite to come back.

But it came back. Kaylee finished her senior year with the straight As she had almost lost, and she will tell you, if you ask, that the bravest thing she ever did was type one word, and the best thing in her life is a grandfather who never once asked why before he came.
