The Flash Drive

I peeled the old tape off the tobacco tin the young man found zip-tied under the truck seat. Inside was a folded letter in Walts handwriting, a key, and a small black flash drive. The letter said, Ruthie, if you are reading this, somebody finally sold the truck. I am guessing it was Brian. I am sorry. Plug this in. Do not let him see it first.

Brian stepped forward and held out his hand for the drive and told me Dad was confused at the end, that whatever was on there was not true.

The young man in the John Deere cap offered to leave. I asked him to stay. And I plugged the drive into my old laptop at the kitchen table, with my son standing very still behind me.

He called me senile and sold his fathers truck for four thousand dollars, and his father had hidden the truth under the seat because he knew exactly which child would do it.

On the drive were Walts own records. Brian, our financial planner son, had for three years been quietly moving money out of the accounts Walt trusted him to help manage, and had been planning to move me into Sunnybrook so the house could be sold too. Walt had found it before he died. He could not bring himself to confront his own boy, so he did what the quiet ones do. He wrote it all down, backed it up, and hid it where only love would look, under the seat of the truck he knew I could never quite part with.

The key went to a lockbox at the credit union, with the originals, and enough in an account Brian never knew about to keep me in my own home for the rest of my life.

Brian did not get to move me anywhere. The family knows now, the money is protected, and the law is sorting the rest. And the young man who bought the truck, Cody, drove it back the next week and would not take my money for it, so we worked out a trade, and now he fixes things around the farm the way Walt used to, and stays for supper. The old sky-blue Ford is back in the barn. I touch the hood every morning, same as always.
