The Ambulance on Route 5

Jenna took the letter out of her purse, the one with the Erie County Medical Center logo, and she stood up in the middle of the fourth quarter with her hands shaking.

Brad, she said to her husband. You need to know what you just made fun of.

She read it. In January 2024, during the lake-effect storm that buried the Southtowns, an ambulance went down on Route 5 with a woman in labor inside, stuck in four feet of snow, the baby coming and no way through. A city snowplow driver found them, dug the ambulance out by hand and by blade, and cleared a path to the hospital in time.

Then Jenna looked at Bradley, and down at the newborn asleep in her mothers arms. That woman in the ambulance was me, Brad. That baby is her. Kevin dug us out. My own brother. You have been drinking his beer and calling his job a joke all night, and he is the reason your daughter is alive.

He wore a quarter-zip to my basement and mocked the man who moves snow from one side of the street to the other, never knowing that snow once stood between his wife and his child.

The room went dead quiet, Bills game and all. Kevin had muted the TV and let it be said, because a man who plows thirty-one hours straight does not need a toast to know what the work is for.

I am his mother. Bradley did not finish his craft IPA. He went and sat down next to Kevin, and he held that baby, and he did not say anything clever for the rest of the night. Which, honestly, was the smartest thing he did all evening.
