11:47 P.M.

PART 3 — 11:47 P.M.

I did not press play that night. I could not bear to hear their last hours. In the morning I did something better. I called a detective I trusted and put the phone in his hands instead of mine.

The baby monitor had saved everything to Kevins old account. The audio. The timestamps. And the door sensor log that said the front door had been opened at 11:47 with a code, while my husband and sons were asleep.

Only a few people ever had that code. Me, Kevin, and Kevins business partner Doug, from the year he watered our plants while we were away.

The recording caught a voice moving through the kitchen in the dark. It was not Kevins voice. The investigators matched it. It was Doug.

The man who held me in the parking lot while I screamed, who paid for the funeral and set up my daughters college fund, was the man who had let himself into my home that night.

Kevin had rewired that house with his own hands. He would never have left a circuit to fail. The fire marshal had been wrong, and the proof had been sitting in a sleeping babys monitor for eight years.

Doug had been drowning in debt, and the business carried a large policy on Kevin. That was the whole reason. That was all my family was worth to him.

He was arrested at his office. The case is with the court now, and the evidence is a little girls phone that never forgot.

I will never get them back. But my sons and my husband will have the truth stand up in a courtroom and say their names. Nora gave them that. My brave girl gave them that.
