The Diner

PART 3 — THE DINER

The certified letter landed on Tanners glass desk in the Pearl District, and he read the first line and laughed. Then he read the second line, and he grabbed his phone and called my sister, shouting, Mom, did you know Aunt Joyces diner is a protected historic landmark.

After the fires in 2020, when I fed the firefighters for free for a week, someone from the city came in with a clipboard. They told me my little diner on Wall Street, built in 1946, was eligible for historic landmark status. All I had to do was say yes.

I said yes. In 2021, the city approved it, quietly, and I never told a soul.

The greasy spoon Tanner wanted to tear down for condos had been a protected historic landmark for three years, and he never once bothered to check.

A protected landmark cannot be demolished. Not by a developer in a Tesla, not by a nephew who threatens an old woman with her own grandchildren at Christmas. The building will stand long after Tanners condos are out of fashion.

Sign it or you are out of this family, Tanner had told me, sliding his contract across my sisters pot roast. I did not sign. I did not need to. The city of Bend had already made sure Joyces Diner was not going anywhere.

Carol, my sister, called me, ashamed. Joyce, she said, I should have stood up for you at dinner. Yes, I said. You should have. But I understand why you did not, and I forgive you, because you are my sister and that is what we do.

Tanner does not call me Aunt Joyce anymore. He does not call at all. That is all right. The grandkids still come in for pie on Sundays, and I still let the high school kids run a tab, and the firefighters still eat free the day after any fire.

You cannot run it forever, Tanner had said. Maybe not. But when I am gone, it will still be here, protected, pie case by the register, twelve stools at the counter, the same coffee pot since 1993. A diner that fed a whole town through a fire is worth more than any condo.
