The Dark Bag

Part 3 — The Dark Bag

Benny survived. The veterinarian called me at midnight to say his numbers were turning, and I sat on a hospital bench holding Rubys hand and laughing through tears.

Ruby was examined by a pediatrician who found her healthy and cleared her for home. The dizziness she described had been brief, and the doctor said the quick report was what kept it that way.

The forensic lab identified the contents of the jacket pocket. It was a controlled substance Shane had been holding for a seller, and he had been handling it carelessly around our home.

The dark bag in Rubys drawing was part of a shipping scheme. Shane had been receiving packages in my name and at the address of the school where I work, so that no one would ever connect them to our house.

My name on that label was not a trap for me. It was cover for him. He had counted on me never opening a box addressed to the school office, and he had counted on a nine year old keeping his secrets.

Ruby had written Dont let Mommy open this because he told her to remember it. She told me later that she drew it so someone would eventually see it, and that is exactly what happened.

Children tell the truth in pictures when they are not allowed to say it in words.

Shane was arrested in the clinic parking lot. He was charged with distribution, reckless endangerment of a child and misuse of mail, and the pocket and the school address sealed the case.

He pleaded guilty. The judge imposed a prison term, ordered treatment and issued a protective order that keeps him away from Ruby and me until she is an adult.

My employer cooperated fully, and the district confirmed in writing that I had no knowledge of the shipments. I returned to work the next week with the principals support.

Ruby began seeing a gentle counselor who uses puppets. After a few visits she told me that telling the truth felt like putting down a heavy backpack.

We changed the locks, the mailing address and the furniture in the kitchen. The dark bag is gone, and so is the fear of it.

Benny came home wearing a plastic cone and looking deeply offended. Ruby fed him chicken from her own plate, and he has not left her side since.
