The Missing Tutor

Part 3 — The Missing Tutor

Ben was found within a day. Investigators followed the phone call, the cheap prepaid number and a rental car receipt, and by the next evening he was in the care of a trained officer and a pediatric nurse.

Mr. Cole had no teaching license at all. He ran an unlicensed overseas placement program, and he had been collecting fees from families who believed their children were headed to an exclusive academy.

The placement was a scam wrapped in a brochure. There was no school waiting at the other end, only a paid arrangement with strangers who would keep children abroad and demand more money from families.

The form with my daughters signature was forged. The payment on the last page had been made by my brother, who wanted to help his struggling niece and had been told it was a scholarship deposit.

He was devastated, and he went to the police the moment he understood. His bank records, text messages and the receipt he kept became the central evidence that connected Cole to every victim family.

The workbook under Bens bed, with its repeated sentence and its torn last line, reached us before the airplane could.

Mr. Cole was stopped at the airport with two other children and a briefcase of passports. He was arrested on charges of fraud, interference with custody and attempted trafficking in minors under fraud, and a federal task force took over the case.

The other families were contacted that night. Every child was returned home safely, and the program was traced back to a small network that was dismantled within a month.

Ben came home with a stuffed owl a flight attendant had given him. He told us he knew something was wrong the day the tutor said his grandmother was not allowed to call.

The court ordered Cole to forfeit his assets and held him without bail. My brothers deposit was returned, along with the savings of the other families.

My daughter cut her hours and filed for a new school placement. Ben returned to class with a counselor and a teacher who reviewed everything he had missed.

We eat dinner together on Sundays again, with phones on the counter and no rules about who may call. Ben says his favorite subject is whatever I am reading.
