The Old Marges Diner Jukebox Held a Secret in the Bottom of the Cabinet

I had to sit down, because inside that napkin was Marges recipe box, the little tin one she kept behind the counter for fifty years, and tucked on top was a note in her hand that read: for whoever loves this old place enough to bring the music back.

Every soul in town had begged Marge for those recipes over the years, and she had never given up a one. The pie that made grown men weep. The chili. The milkshakes we drank on Saturday nights until we could not breathe from laughing. She took them to her grave, everyone said. But she had not. She had hidden them in the jukebox, meaning them for the person who cared enough to save the heart of the diner along with its music.

She had known that whoever bought that Wurlitzer and troubled themselves to make it sing again was the one person in the world she could trust with the rest of what made Marges Diner home.

I sat in my living room with Patsy Cline playing and read through those cards in Marges own hand, and it was like sitting at her counter again, sixteen years old, the whole of my life still ahead of me.

And an idea took hold of me that would not let go.

I was too old to run a diner. But my granddaughter was not. She had been talking for years about opening a little place of her own, and she had grown up on stories of Marges. So I gave her the recipe box.

Last month she opened her doors. She calls it Marges Corner, and she has the pie and the chili and the milkshakes exactly as Marge made them, from the cards in Marges own hand. And in the corner, where everyone can see it, sits a big chrome Wurlitzer full of Patsy Cline.

Opening night, I dropped a dime in that jukebox and danced one slow turn in the middle of the new diner, the way I danced with Raymond in the old one, while the whole town watched with wet eyes. Fifty years Marge fed this town. Because she trusted a jukebox to find the right hands, she is feeding it still.
