The Drawing

PART 2 — THE DRAWING

When the fireworks started, the bus driver stood up, walked over to Preston, and pulled a folded drawing out of his shirt pocket. It was in crayon, signed by twenty-two children, and at the top, in big letters, it said THANK YOU FOR NOT LETTING US FALL.

In January of 2024, he said, he was driving his route in a whiteout near this ranch when the bus slid off the highway and hung half over the ditch, twenty-two kids inside, the whole thing ready to roll.

No tow truck could get through the storm. No help was coming in time. Then a rancher came across his own frozen field on a tractor, hitched onto the bus, and pulled it back onto the road, slow and steady, with every child still aboard.

The man Preston called a manure-shoveler had pulled a school bus full of twenty-two children out of a ditch in a whiteout with his own tractor.

The kids made that drawing afterward, the driver said, every one of them signing their name. He had carried it in his pocket ever since, waiting for the chance to give it to the man who saved them.

Preston, the software engineer who calls this place the dirt farm, who said his stock options are worth more than every animal on the property, lowered his craft IPA.

Cody just flipped another steak and grinned and said the tractor did most of the work. But the bus driver shook his head and said no tractor drives itself out into eighty-mile-an-hour wind. A man does that.

The bus drivers whole family had come to the cookout to be near the man who saved those children, and Preston never even knew who they were.

Thirty-one years of calving season and frostbite and hay at five in the morning, and my son also, on one white January day, pulled twenty-two children back from the edge of a ditch and never asked for a word of thanks.

Somebody has got to shovel the manure, Preston had laughed. Somebody also has to drive a tractor into a whiteout for a busload of kids. On this dirt farm, that somebody is my son.
