The Navy Dress

PART 2 — THE NAVY DRESS

When the cake was cut, the old woman in the navy dress steadied herself on the table and said, Tiffany, I believe you are the one who sold my husbands house. Do you remember what you told me his suits were worth.

Then she turned to my daughter Gina, and her eyes filled.

In 2019, her husband, a veteran, had passed, and his good suits were donated to a little dry cleaner on Atwells Avenue. While cleaning one of them, the woman there found something sewn into the lining. Eleven thousand dollars in cash, hidden there by a careful old soldier and nearly lost forever.

The woman Tiffany mocked for pressing other peoples shirts had found eleven thousand dollars sewn into a dead veterans suit, and instead of keeping a dime, she tracked down his widow to give it back.

That widow was the old woman in the navy dress. Gina had found her, driven to her, and placed her husbands hidden savings into her hands when she needed it most.

And then, the old woman said, her voice turning hard, I had to sell the house anyway, and the broker who handled it told me it was worth far less than it was. That broker, Tiffany, was you.

The room went very quiet. Tiffany, the real estate broker with her face on the bus benches, who an hour before had mocked Gina for ironing other peoples underwear, had gone pale.

Gina just refilled the meatballs and said she only did what was right, that the money was never hers to keep. But the widow held her hand and said, you are the only person in this whole story who gave me back something instead of taking it.

Twenty-four years of steam and hangers and other peoples stains, and my daughter also returned eleven thousand dollars she could have quietly pocketed, to a grieving widow she had never met.

Somebody has got to press the shirts, Tiffany had laughed. Somebody also has to be honest when no one is watching. One of the two women in this story was. It was not the one on the bus benches.
