A Package Arrived Two Weeks After My Husband Died, and What Was Inside Terrified Me

The three knocks came from inside my house, and I froze with the phone still at my ear and my husband number on the screen, and then the front door burst open, and it was the police, the ones I had called, coming through fast and loud. What I had heard was not a ghost and not my dead husband. It was a man, a real and living man, who had been hiding in my house, and the officers had come in the back the moment they arrived and were already putting him in handcuffs in my own hallway.

It took days to understand the whole of it, and when I did, it broke my heart and mended it at the same time. There had been a man watching me for weeks before my husband died. My husband had figured it out before I ever did. Those photographs in the package, the one of our house at night, the one of me getting into my car, he had not taken them. He had found them. This man had been leaving them, and my husband had been quietly gathering the proof, that disposable camera full of pictures of the watcher, building a case to protect me.

My husband spent the last days of his life fighting to keep me safe, and never once let me see how frightened he was for me.

The night before he died, my husband had confronted the man across the street, at 8:40, the time written on the back of that photo. The stress of it, the doctors think, was too much for his heart, which had never been strong. He came home shaking and did not tell me why, and the next day he was gone, and I thought it was just his heart giving out. It was his heart. But it was his heart worn down by carrying a terror he would not put on me.

Before that, though, he had done the one thing that saved me. He had mailed that package to a develop and ship service, so that if anything happened to him, the evidence would still reach me, and reach the police. The photographs, the camera, the dates, all of it. His last act on this earth was making sure that even gone, he could still protect his wife.

The man who had been watching me had my husband old phone, taken somehow, which is how the calls came from his number, a cruel game. And he had gotten into the house while I was distracted by the final photograph he left on my driveway. But he made one mistake. He did it while I was on the line with the police, and they were already on their way, and they took him before he could do a thing to me.

He is in prison now, where he will stay a long time, because my husband evidence was more than enough. I am safe. I sleep with the lights on some nights still, but I am safe. And I know something now I did not know two weeks after the funeral, when I almost threw that package away. I know that my husband loved me enough to spend his last strength standing between me and the dark. He could not tell me while he lived. So he made sure the truth, and the proof, and the protection, would find me after he was gone.
