The Receipt Behind The 2022 Stub

At two in the morning I got Roys Bible down off the refrigerator, and behind the 2022 courthouse receipt was one Id never seen, a different color, from a different office, with Roys signature and a stamp across it, and when I read the date I sat right down on the kitchen floor, because it proved the tax sale should never have happened.

The lien buyer had stood on Roys carport slab and told me our taxes went delinquent in 2024, that hed bought the lien, that Id pay him eleven thousand plus interest in thirty days or the house was his, that old folks never have the money.

He did not know what Roy set up before he died.

My husband, who paid our taxes in cash at the courthouse for fifty-one years, had enrolled our home in the states property tax relief program for seniors in 2022, and had it exempted, which means the 2024 taxes the lien was sold over were never actually owed, and a lien sold on taxes that were exempt is void.

Roy did not trust anything to a computer, which is exactly why the trouble started when the bill went to email I never saw. But before he passed, Roy had gone to the courthouse and gotten us into the senior tax exemption, and he kept the stamped approval behind the 2022 receipt in his Bible, where he kept everything that mattered.

Our house was exempt. There were no delinquent taxes to sell a lien over. The county had made a mistake selling it, and the lien buyer who does this a hundred times had bought a lien on a debt that did not legally exist.

I took Roys Bible to a lawyer in Dothan the next morning, and he looked at that stamped exemption and got very still, and then he said, maam, this lien is void, and the county owes you an apology, and this man owes you nothing but your peace back.

When the lien buyer came back for his keys, I did not argue. I handed him a copy of the recorded exemption and I said, one way or another, you said. Heres the way. My husband got this house exempted from those taxes in 2022. There was never any debt. Your lien is void. You bought nothing. You might take that up with the county, but you will not take one thing of Roys.

He stopped whistling. The county voided the sale, refunded his money, and sent me a letter of apology for the mistake that nearly cost me my home.

Old folks never have the money, he had said. This old woman did not need money. She needed the receipt Roy kept behind the 2022 stub in his Bible, and it was worth more than the eleven thousand that man tried to squeeze out of me. Roy pressed our initials into that carport slab in 1972. He is still keeping us on it, from behind a page in his Bible.
