Under the Floorboards

Wade Morris kept his weapon up until Ray Becker set the old rifle down on the hay bale, and then Ray started to laugh that broken laugh and said, go ahead, Gene, show them what Daddy buried under here in 1974.

Gene lifted the rusted tin box out of the hole in the floorboards and opened it there on the barn floor, in the swinging lantern light, with two deputies and a soaked, grieving brother watching.

It was not money, and it was not a weapon, and it was not whatever ugly thing fifteen years of silence had made them both expect. It was a letter, in their fathers hand, and under it a bundle of savings bonds, and a second, older will.

The old man had known his boys would fight. The letter said so. He left Gene the land because Gene had stayed and worked it for forty years, and he had always meant to. But he had set aside the bonds, decades of them, quietly bought a little at a time, so that Ray would have his fair share of everything their father built, down to the penny. He had buried it where he knew the truth would eventually force them to dig.

The brothers came to that barn ready to tear each other apart over a farm, and their father had been waiting under the floorboards all along to make it right.

Ray read the letter twice. Then the car dealer from Wichita who had not cried at the funeral sat down in the straw and wept like a boy, and Gene sat down next to him, and the deputies quietly lowered their lights.

No one was arrested. Ray had pointed that rifle at the floor, never at his brother, and in the end it was grief, not malice, that had driven him out into the storm.

Cody came down from the house in his pajamas, and he watched his father and his uncle, who had not spoken in fifteen years, divide their fathers bonds right there on the tailgate of a truck, the way the old man wanted. The Becker brothers work different land now, but they speak every Sunday, and Cody has an uncle again, which is more than any tin box is worth.
