Something Stronger

Nate Gibbs held the empty prescription bottle to the light. The name on the label was Brandis mother, the prescription a month old, the bottle now completely empty. Behind him, Dennis Cole was slumped over his soup, breathing slow, pupils like pinpoints.

Brandi stood in the doorway and said it was not what it looked like. From the top of the stairs, twelve-year-old Jake shouted that he had heard her on the phone, that she had said it is done.

Brandi did not hand over her phone. She started typing on it, fast, and Nate took it out of her hands before she could finish, because whatever she was deleting or sending, it was evidence now.

The paramedics got Dennis to the hospital in time. His stomach was pumped, and the doctors confirmed what the soup bowl and the empty bottle already said. He had been poisoned, and another hour might have been too late.

A twelve-year-old boy who did not even understand the words he overheard saved his fathers life by repeating them to the right person.

It came apart quickly. The new life insurance policy Brandi had helped Dennis sign a month earlier. The call Jake overheard in the garage, he is healthy as a horse, it is going to take something stronger. The texts on the phone she had tried so hard to wipe, to an accomplice who was arrested within the day.

Brandi was charged with attempted murder and insurance fraud. Dennis Cole, when he was strong enough to understand what his son had done, wept at the boys bedside and said he owed him his life.

Jakes grandmother, who had never trusted Brandi for a minute, moved in to help while Dennis recovered. The three car washes stayed open. And Dennis, who had nearly married his way into an early grave, learned to listen a little closer to the boy who had been trying to tell him something all along.
