Lena did not cry. She did not apologize like she had every time for nine years. She set down her cup and turned to face Brittany in front of the whole congregation. And then my daughter stood up, and she did not raise her voice, because she did not need to.
She said, Brittany, you asked when I am going to give up playing house with somebody else mistake. So let me answer you, here, in front of God and everyone.
You know why you cannot have your own kids, Brittany had said. God took one look and decided not to risk it.
Lena said, nine years ago a two year old boy was left behind by a father who ran, and there was nobody to take him. Nobody. I was not rich. I was not ready. I gave up my savings, my nights, and yes, the family I always dreamed of having, because a child needed a mother and I was the one who stayed.
She looked down at that little boy, sitting in the pew in his good clothes, watching her.
She said, you call him a mistake. He is the great work of my whole life. He calls me Mama because I earned that name at three in the morning with a sick child and no help and no thanks, for nine years. You want to talk about who cannot have children. I have a child. I chose him. And I would choose him again a thousand times over anything you think you have.
The church was dead silent. And then that little boy, nine years old now, climbed down out of the pew, walked over, and put his hand in Lena hand, and said, loud enough for everyone, that is my Mama.
That was when I stood up too, his grandmother, ashamed it took me nine years. I told the congregation plainly that my daughter was the finest mother I had ever seen, and that anyone who could not see it was welcome to leave.
Brittany did not say another word. Her own husband would not look at her. She left before the reception, and I cannot say anyone missed her.
Lena did not gloat. She just picked her boy up, too big to carry now but she carried him anyway, and she took him to get cake.
They said she was barren. They said God decided not to risk it. But my daughter turned an abandoned child into a loved and happy boy who runs to her and calls her Mama, and if that is not exactly what God had in mind, I do not know what is.
Nine years I watched her swallow it to keep the peace. She does not swallow it anymore. And that little boy has a mother who will never again let anyone make her small in front of him.
