Should Have Labeled It

Jake shrugged with my empty lasagna dish on his lap and said I should have labeled it. So I pulled out my phone, opened the group chat with our landlord, and started reading one of the clauses from our lease out loud.

The clause about shared living costs and the section where the landlord had put in writing, when we signed, that groceries and personal food were each tenants own property and were not to be taken. I read it slowly, and then I read the next thing, because I had more than a lease.

I had a year of it. Photos of my labeled containers, dated. The receipts for the extra hundred dollars a month I had been spending to replace what kept vanishing. And a note of every time I had raised it and been called the petty guy who keeps score over food.

For a whole year the only thing I had lacked was the will to stop sighing and start keeping the record, and the moment I read the lease and laid the labeled photos on the counter, the joke about me being petty stopped being funny to anyone in the room.

Jakes girlfriend looked away. Our other roommate paused his game. And Jake, who always had a shrug ready, did not have one for a dated photo of the lasagna he was still holding the dish from, the one I had labeled with my name in marker.

I did not yell. I said, I did label it, Jake. Here is the photo, from Sunday. And here is the lease we both signed, and here is a hundred dollars a month for a year that I have been quietly eating so I would not be the petty one. I am done being called petty for wanting to eat my own food.

The lease was clear, the photos were dated, and our landlord, who was in that group chat, weighed in that he had spelled this out for exactly this reason and would be documenting it.

Faced with a year of evidence and a lease in writing, Jake could not laugh it off. He paid me back for the month, and then, because our landlord was now watching, he stopped. The buffet closed.

My food is my own now, and the shelf stays how I left it. A year of empty containers ended not with a slammed door, but with me reading a lease clause and a stack of dated photos out loud, and it turned out the guy keeping score was just the only one keeping receipts.
