Two Thousand Four Hundred Dollars

Casey stayed in bed and asked if I was really doing this over a few hundred dollars. So I printed the statement with every charge she had made highlighted, two thousand four hundred dollars, and told her the banks fraud department had already opened a case that morning and would be asking her to confirm whether she had permission.

Because I had stopped paying it down quietly and started keeping the record. Eight months of just for gas that turned into groceries and a weekend away, and I had saved every statement, every charge, until the total was undeniable.

For eight months the only thing I had lacked was the nerve to make it official, and the moment the bank opened a fraud case, the one who weaponizes money in a friendship became the one who would have to tell a fraud investigator, on the record, whether she had ever been allowed to use my card.

Our third roommate stopped in the hallway with her coffee. She had heard me ask Casey every month since spring, and she knew exactly whose money had been disappearing.

I did not shout and I did not throw her out. I said, here is every charge you made, highlighted, going back eight months. Two thousand four hundred dollars. The bank opened a case this morning. They are going to call you and ask if you had permission, and whatever you tell them, there is a paper trail either way. The prescription I could not buy yesterday was my insulin.

The statement was the statement. There is no doing-this-over-a-few-hundred-dollars once a fraud department is on the line and the number is two thousand four hundred.

Faced with a case number and a highlighted total, Casey found the money in a way she never had when it was just me asking, because a bank is not a roommate she can call dramatic.

I paid down my card, got my insulin, and the fraud case closed once she repaid it, which was all I had ever actually wanted.

She moved out at the end of the lease, and I do not miss it. Eight months of charges ended not with a screaming match, but with one highlighted statement and a case already open, and it turned out the one who weaponizes money was just the only one who finally added it up.
