Ron did not read it. He picked it up, looked at the logo at the top, and put it back down.
So I read it for him. Transmission, good condition, fluid clean, no leaks, no service needed. Signed by a certified tech at a shop across town, dated Friday.
The man waiting for the oil change put down his newspaper.
Ron started talking fast. He said that other shop did not know what they were looking at. He said transmissions fail without warning. He said I would be sorry. I just asked him again, very politely, to show me the part he said was failing.
He could not.
That was when the man with the newspaper stood up. His name was Walt. He was seventy four and had been bringing his truck to that shop since before Ron worked there. He asked Ron for a copy of his service history. All of it. Ron said he would have to look it up. Walt said he would wait.
I had spent two years thinking I was the only fool in that waiting room, and it turned out I had company.
I left without paying for anything. That night I went through two years of receipts from that shop. I added them up. Three thousand nine hundred dollars in repairs, most of them on parts I never saw.
I took the whole stack to the shop across town. The tech there, a young woman named Kelsey, went through them line by line with me. She said about half of it was probably never done. She said a brake job listed in March could not have happened, because my brakes were original.
I filed a complaint with the office of the state attorney general. It took ten minutes online. I attached every receipt and the inspection report.
Walt filed one too. So did two other people from that waiting room, it turned out.
Three months later I got a letter. The shop had agreed to a settlement with the state. Every customer who filed was getting a refund for repairs that could not be verified. My check was two thousand six hundred dollars.
Ron no longer works there. The owner, an older man named Frank who had no idea what was going on, called me personally to apologize. He said he had trusted Ron for years and never checked. He said he checks everything now.
I still take my car to Kelsey. She shows me every part she replaces. She hands it to me in a little plastic bag, even when I tell her she does not have to.
And Walt? He calls me every few months. Last time he said he finally got his truck inspected somewhere honest, and it turned out the transmission Ron replaced for him in 2023 was the original one, still running fine.
We laughed about that for a long time.
Sweetheart, just trust me. I did. For two years. Now I read the report.
