For Years, My Brother’s Wife Had A Talent For Creating Problems

“I swear, every gathering gets stressful when she’s in charge of it.”

I set my fork beside my plate, looked across the table at her, and said, “Can you give me one example?”

The room went quiet.

She laughed like it was a joke. “Oh, come on.”

“No,” I said. “Just one example. One thing I actually did.”

For the first time all afternoon, she didn’t have a quick answer ready. She started talking about how people felt and how things always seemed tense. I asked again. My brother shifted in his chair. My mother looked down at her plate.

“An actual example.”

My sister-in-law finally mentioned the directions I’d sent for the party.

“The directions that got everyone else here on time?” I asked.

A couple people smiled into their drinks.

She tried the chair complaint next. My father quietly pointed at six empty folding chairs lined up against the wall. After that, she mostly just sat there.

What surprised me wasn’t her reaction. It was my brother’s.

He put down his glass and said, “She’s right.”

Everybody looked at him.

He rubbed his forehead and let out a long breath. Then he admitted he’d spent years hearing the same stories about me, but every time he actually witnessed one of these situations himself, the facts never matched the version his wife told later.

Nobody said a word.

My sister-in-law got red and accused everyone of ganging up on her, but the spell was broken. People started bringing up other incidents. Little things they’d noticed over the years and ignored because it seemed easier.

The party moved on eventually, but something had changed.

For the first time in years, nobody was looking at me like I needed to explain myself.

They were all looking at her.
