The Hearing Device

Part 3 — The Hearing Device

Ella could hear me clearly in the car, and what she said next gave the investigators everything they needed. She told them the argument she had overheard was about a collector who was coming for payment.

Her father had borrowed money from a private lender to cover betting losses. The lender had told him that his wife would be visited at her workplace on a set afternoon unless the debt was paid.

Ellas father pawned the hearing device for cash, then claimed it was broken so no one would ask. He also punished her for repeating what she heard, and he took her way of hearing so she could not tell anyone.

The name in the detectives notebook matched the pawnshop receipt, and the appointment time was the same Friday. The collector planned to wait outside my daughters office at the end of her shift.

The detective did not wait for Friday. He contacted the building manager, arranged a quiet police presence and asked my daughter to stay home until it was handled.

A ten year old who listened closely, and a grandmother who finally followed an odd phone call, kept a whole family a step ahead.

The collector was stopped in the parking lot before he reached the door. He was arrested on charges of extortion and unlawful lending, and the lenders books gave investigators the rest of his operation.

Ellas father cooperated after the arrest. He admitted the pawning and the punishments, and he was charged with child neglect and theft from the family.

The court ordered treatment for his gambling and a supervised arrangement with his daughter. My daughter filed for a protective order and was granted temporary custody, which became permanent after he completed his program.

The pawnshop owner returned the device without charge, and he signed a statement as a witness. He also called a local hearing clinic that offered Ella a free cleaning, a new case and a spare set of batteries.

Ella chatters now, and my house is loud in the best way. She hears the dog, the kettle and every secret I whisper in her ear.

She wears her device even on the playground, and she told me she never wants quiet again. I said a little quiet is fine, as long as it is something she chooses.
