Now You Cant Study Anyway

Laurens work phone started buzzing on the kitchen counter, and she went quiet, because the report I filed at 3:47 that afternoon had been received and escalated, and the people calling her were not going to be impressed by a nail appointment.

For years Lauren cast me as the ungrateful cousin sleeping on her couch, even as I paid her six hundred a month for it. This time the truth went to the people who mattered, because my mentor Sheila told me what we are required to do when we see something with a name.

What I found when Lauren asked me to just double-check her spreadsheets was that a senior manager at a competing firm was moving client money in a way that had a name, and that name was fraud, and as a CPA candidate who had seen it, I was professionally required to report it.

The copy in my suitcase held the spreadsheets and the pattern Sheila confirmed in fifteen minutes with her glasses off. At 3:47 I made the report to the proper authority and to Laurens own firm, because whoever sees it and stays silent becomes part of it, and I was not going to fail my ethics before I ever passed my exam.

Lauren threw my charger and my exam calculator into a snowbank four floors down and told me now I could clean instead. She did not know the report was already filed. She called me ungrateful through the door, and then her work phone rang, and it was HR.

Mark muted the Timberwolves and asked what I was talking about. I told him: accurate, not dramatic.

I did not go back for the charger. I checked into a cheap hotel, borrowed a calculator from the testing center, and Monday morning I sat FAR, the section everybody fails, and I passed it.

I have all four sections now. I am a CPA. Laurens conduct is under review at her firm and with the board, on paper, where being the senior cousin with the condo does not help her.

I moved into my own place in St. Paul. Small, quiet, mine, with no pull-out couch and no one taking six hundred dollars for it.

Because when you see something like this, you know what you are required to do, Sheila told me. I did it. And Lauren stopped calling me ungrateful before her phone finished its first buzz, because the truth got to her firm before her spin could.
