Your Mother Wont Even Know

Through the cameras speaker I heard Amber say your mother wont even know until the paperwork is done, and then my granddaughter, sitting on the curb, texted me grandma I think Mom is trying to take your house, please dont be mad at Daddy, and I stood in my sisters fellowship hall in my black dress and told ADT to send the police.

The Knoxville officers arrived while Amber was still measuring my living room window. They confirmed from the deed that I am the sole owner, that I bought the house with my late husbands savings in my name alone, and that the master code Amber used was one I gave my son Jason, for emergencies, not for moving his family in.

The paperwork Amber bragged about was a scheme to move into my house and establish herself there while she pushed some claim she thought she could paper over, but there was no paperwork that mattered, because a deed in my name alone is not undone by a daughter-in-law with a tape measure and a master code.

For fourteen years, whenever Amber said something ugly, Jason said just let it go, Mom, shes stressed. My son is not a cruel man. He is a tired one, worn down into carrying his wifes boxes into his mothers house. But tired is not an excuse for standing in a home that is not yours.

The police had them load my granddaughters things back into the Budget truck. I told ADT not to run the siren, because the girls were sitting right there on the curb, and none of this was theirs to be frightened by. Jason set the box down and would not look at the camera.

I drove back from Birmingham and changed the master code, and I gave the new one to no one. I had a lawyer send Amber a letter making it plain that the house is mine, that there is no paperwork coming, and that the next entry is a trespass. And I called my granddaughter, the brave one who texted me the truth, and told her she did exactly right, and that she is never to worry about being mad at her daddy for telling the truth.

Grandma, I think Mom is trying to take your house, she wrote. She was. She did not. The girls have a room at my house whenever they visit, but it is my house, in my name, and the only paperwork that was ever done is the deed with my name on it and no one elses.
