Emily held her new baby a little closer and told me she did not tell her mother, she told Steves daughter, who is her friend, who said she just wanted to see a picture of the cabin, and I understood that the combination, my late mothers birthday, had traveled from a family photo straight to the man now standing in my cabin with a rifle case.
The Michigan State Police trooper made it out to Munising in about forty minutes. He confirmed my ex-wife Carol is not on the title, that I paid cash for the forty acres in my name alone, and that Steve got in with a combination he had no right to know.
I wrote my mothers birthday on the back of a family photo in 2019, the same photo I gave Emily for Christmas, and Steves daughter, visiting Emily, saw it, and passed the number to her father, so the code to my cabin was hiding in plain sight in a Christmas gift, and Carol and Steve used it to move in the Saturday before deer opener.
For thirty years, whenever Carol did something I did not understand, I called her and ended up apologizing. I handed the baby back to my daughter and called the state police instead, and the state police do not apologize to people in another mans cabin.
The trooper gave Carol and Steve the choice to load the rifle case and the groceries back into the red Ram or spend deer opener in a cell. They left. I changed the combination that night from my daughters kitchen, off my mothers birthday and onto numbers nobody has ever seen written down.
Emily cried. I told her the truth, that it was not her fault, that she trusted a friend the way I trusted Carol for thirty years, and that the only people who did wrong were the two who used a childrens Christmas photo to break into a mans dream. I forgave my daughter before she finished apologizing. Some leaks are betrayal. Hers was just love being used against her, and I know exactly how that feels.
Youre white as a sheet, Dad, Emily had said. I am not, anymore. The cabin is mine, forty acres of hardwoods, and my mothers birthday is out of it and safe in my heart where Carol cannot reach. I held my granddaughter in that rocking chair a long time after, and I thought, this is what I bought the cabin for, and no one is taking it from me.
