The Forged Signature

Through the kitchen window I watched Tonys mothers old Buick pull in behind his truck, and on the phone I could still hear her shouting. Anthony, why does the insurance company have my signature on a form I never saw.

That was the piece Tony never counted on.

Nineteen years as a claims adjuster for State Farm, and I know exactly how a beneficiary change gets processed, who has to sign off, and how easy it is to check whether a signature is real. When the confirmation letter came to the house by mistake, naming a Crystal Hughes in my place, I did not just see a mistress. I saw a forgery. Because the form required a witness signature, and Tony had used his own mothers name, and it was not her hand.

He told me to stop going through his mail. If he had wanted that, he should not have forged his mother onto a legal document and mailed it to a company I have worked at for nineteen years.

I showed his mother the letter before I ever confronted Tony, because a forged signature is a crime, and the person whose name was forged has every right to know. She did not take it quietly. Tonys mother raised him, and she did not raise him to steal her name to leave his wife for a woman named Crystal.

She came through my kitchen door like weather. She looked at the form, she looked at her son, and she said the thing that ended it. You forged my name, Anthony. Over my dead body does that stand.

The beneficiary change was voided the moment the forgery was reported, Crystal Hughes right off it. And the forgery itself became Tonys problem with the law, not just with me.

I filed with every document lined up the way I line up a claim, dated and sourced, including the night he backed me into the refrigerator and knocked our daughters Best Mom magnet to the floor. A protective order came with it.

Tonys own mother sat at my table that morning and ate the shrimp and grits I made, and told me I would always be her daughter, Tony or no Tony. I kept the magnet. I will always be Best Mom.
