My Husband Handles All Our Finances

The phone rang while my husband was still standing there in his work clothes pretending not to panic.

He stared at it so long I finally answered myself.

Man on the other end immediately asked, “You got my money or not?” Like we’d already had this conversation before. No introduction. Nothing.

I said he had the wrong number.

He got quiet for a second and then said my husband’s full name and our address.

My husband snatched the phone out of my hand so fast he almost dropped it. He walked outside onto the porch but I could still hear pieces of it through the screen door. Mostly him saying “just give me until Friday” over and over.

Our daughter showed up twenty minutes later because I’d texted asking her to come by.

The second she saw her father’s face she asked what happened to the trust account.

He kept trying to talk around it. “Temporary transfer.” “Investment issue.” “Short-term problem.” Accountant words that meant absolutely nothing.

Then my daughter asked something I hadn’t even considered yet.

“How did you withdraw that much without notifying me?”

That’s when he admitted he never removed himself as trustee after her grandmother died.

Apparently he’d still had full access the entire time.

My daughter just sat there staring at him. Not crying. More embarrassed than emotional honestly.

Then she asked if this had anything to do with the strange woman who came to his office last month.

Neither of us knew what she was talking about.

She said she stopped by his accounting office unexpectedly and heard a woman screaming through the door about “her retirement money being gone too.”

My husband immediately started yelling that it was unrelated.

That word too hung in the room for a second.

Too.

Our daughter quietly asked how many accounts were missing money.

Nobody answered her.

Then she opened the desk drawer beside him looking for tissues and found a stack of unopened certified letters rubber-banded together.

All from different families.

One envelope had “FINAL NOTICE — ESTATE MISAPPROPRIATION INVESTIGATION” stamped across the front.
